The mission of SportFlyers.org is twofold:

  • 1 Bring in New Pilots

The pilot community has been on the endangered species list for quite some time. In 1999 there were 635,509 active pilots. By 2007 that number had dwindled to 590,347, or roughly a 7% decrease. In 1999 there were 97,359 student pilots. By 2008 that number was down 17% to 80,989. Definition of insanity: continue doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. It’s time for a change in the way we bring new people into aviation. SportFlyers will lead that change.

  • 2 Make Flying More Fun!

So what do you do with your flying privileges? Visit Grandma? The infamous $100 hamburger? “I will never forget the feeling of getting my Private Pilot certificate: a sense of satisfaction, accomplishment, and pride,” said Justin Shelley, Vice President and co-founder of SportFlyers.org. “Within minutes that feeling changed to: now what? I had nothing to practice. No one to fly with. The excitement and the justification to spend money were gone. I quit flying for three years.” Flying, or anything else in life, is more fun when it’s shared. SportFlyers will organize group flying events, activities, and competitions across the nation. Brush the dust off your wings and let’s go fly!
