I was born in Texarkana, Texas and raised in Ashdown, AR., a very small town with a population of just over 5,000. I graduated from a private school where the graduating class was only 10 people. Yes, I am used to the small towns and how local communities can stay together. I now live in Texarkana, AR as the proud parent of a young son who is now the driving force behind SportFlyers.org.
After leaving high school I went straight into the military, serving 9 years in the US Army. Four years were active duty and the rest were in the National Guard. Initially I served as ADA (air defense artillery). Once in the National Guard I was enlisted to serve as Blackhawk and Huey crew chief. During my Guard time I worked for companies such as General Dynamics and ITT Industries. In that time I lived in such places as Cairo, Egypt and Kuwait City, Kuwait.
On the aviation side, my grandfather was a glider pilot in WW2 flying a WACO CG-4A. With dozens of missions flown, I was a bright eyed kid at the foot of my grandfather listening to stories that amazed me. So grew my love for aviation. I wanted to fly almost as soon as I could walk.
As a young kid I would go to the airport and stand with my hands locked into the fence wishing that someone would take me flying. My first flight was in Cherokee 140 off of a grass strip, in a cow field, hoping that we made the power lines at the end. Granted I knew nothing about it then, but looking back it's a bit of a country way of flying. That kick started my determination to one day be a pilot.
Things never turn out the way you want them to. Through my military service and constant traveling I was never able to slow down enough to actually start training. Finally, at age 28 I was finally able to settle down and start my flying lessons. It was a tough road, and as a single parent I had to really watch every penny. But I did it! My 41st hour was with the examiner . . . on my check ride. Thanks to all who made the dream a reality!
I have also worked with US Aviation Group out of Denton Texas as an aircraft salesman where I have truly learned more in a short time than I ever thought possible. My love for aircraft and appreciation for the fun of flying have increased dramatically. I have had the privilege of meeting with many different people and have attended many air shows. Along the way I have gained a wealth of knowledge about the aviation community.
